Camp Engineer It

So this week is National Engineering Week and we are gearing up at Christie. We have a variety of activities planned this week. Exposure and simplicity. As we were planning, we realized that the Engineering mindset is embedded in everything we do at Christie. We use the Engineering design process, we have class jobs that are modeled after real Engineering jobs, we do school wide design challenges, we challenge students everyday to think differently and produce not just consume, and we have the Learning Commons where students can create and explore daily. By weaving Engineering into what we do, we are trying to create a culture that supports this mindset. Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, and Critical Thinking.
We went with a camp theme. Camp Engineer It...where, "If you can imagine it, you can create it." We tied our challenges to 5th Grade camp to make it a more realistic problem. The challenges are very open ended for teachers to modify or adjust depending on the needs of their students. We have connected each Engineering challenge to an Engineering career along with a literature connection. Can't wait to see what our Cubs come up with this week. The week will end with us blasting off water rockets that the students have designed. I'll post pictures later. Be sure to follow @ChristieCubs this week and #CubEngineer
